Ratings Explained

The PenFeed rating system provides readers with our evaluation of each element of our fountain pen reviews. Each score is evaluated as a percentage from 0% to 100% with a granularity of 5%. We evaluate each element independently using the following criteria:

Appearance: This rating is a subjective evaluation of the appearance of the fountain pen. It is dependent on the color, design, and overall aesthetic qualities of the pen.
Tom: I prefer dark pens with simple designs.
Example ~100%: Lamy 2000                          Example ~50%: Pilot Vanishing Point
Phillip: I prefer sleek pens with unique designs and tight finishes.
Example ~100%: Parker Urban Chiseled         Example ~50%: Lamy ABC

Build Quality: This rating is our evaluation of the construction and our perceived level of attention to detail that the designers put into the pen's design. Things we consider include: quality of materials, design tolerances, and feel (weight, length).
Example ~100%: Lamy 2000                                  Example ~50%: Platinum Preppy

Feed: This rating is an evaluation of the feed that provides a steady flow of ink to the nib. This score evaluates the feed's ability to keep up and provide the correct flow of ink to the nib.
     Example ~100%: Sailor 1911                                 Example ~50%: Noodler's Ahab

Nib: This rating is another (mostly) subjective evaluation due to differences in writing style/preferences. We evaluate the nib based on its smoothness, feedback on smooth paper, design, and available options.
Example ~100%: Faber Castell Ambition                Example ~50%: Pilot Varsity

Capping/Posting: This rating is our evaluation on how securely the pen posts/caps as well as the weigh/comfort associated with capping and posting the fountain pen.
Example ~100%: TWSBI Mini                               Example ~50%: TWSBI 580

Filling System: This rating is an evaluation of the filling system of the reviewed pen. We evaluate the filling system based on if the pen comes with a filling system to fill the fountain pen from ink bottles as well as the quality and ease of filling the fountain pen.
Example ~100%: TWSBI Vac                               Example ~50%: Monteverde Poquito

Cleaning: This rating evaluates the ease of taking apart and fully cleaning a fountain pen. In order to keep a fountain pen in good working condition, it is critical that the user keep the pen cleaned and lubricate all o-rings. Some pens aren't designed to allow the user to fully clean their pens and we consider this in our evaluation.
Example ~100%: Platinum Cool                            Example ~50%: Mont Blanc 149

Value: The value section is a general statement about the value and performance/price ratio of the fountain pen based on our assessment of the fountain pens in the price range.
Example ~100%: Pilot Metropolitan                      Example ~50%: Mont Blanc 149

Conclusion: This section illustrates our overall experience with the fountain pen. The conclusion will take all categories into consideration.

Adjusted Overall Score: This score is our overall satisfaction rating with the pen being reviewed. This score differs from the average because it weighs each of the pen's scores differently. As an example, if a pen receives a perfect score for all categories except having a very poor nib, then the pen would likely receive a score lower than the average of all categories. The nib is important to the overall writing experience.
